THE COMMANDER (Red, Hot & Blue Series) New Release Excerpt #2

The Commander (Red Hot & Blue) Cat JohnsonJust when they thought they were out of last chances, love comes around again.

Red, Hot, & Blue, Book 12

To his men on his SpecOps team, Hank Miller is simply the commander. They treat him like he’s more than a mere man, but Hank would be the first to admit he is full of the same fears, feelings and desires. He just doesn’t let them show.

The military is his life, and that’s all he needs—until he travels to Pigeon Hollow for a wedding and meets the woman his men reverently call “Mama”.

Lois Gordon is nothing like Hank envisioned. Instead of the plump, older woman happily baking pies in her farmhouse kitchen, Lois is a smart, sexy powerhouse who runs Gordon Equine…and tempts him to break all his own rules.

The heat between them quickly flares into a weekend fling hotter than Lois’s oven. But with Hank’s dangerous career and two failed marriages between them, forever could be too much to ask for.

Product Warnings: Contains one smoking-hot mama and a man tough enough to not need pot holders to handle her.

“I was just fixin’ to bring the last bag of trash from the living room out to the bins when I heard Mandy squawking.” Lois tilted her head toward the doorway.

“I can take it out for you.” Hank moved toward the hall. Lois jumped to follow. It was strange having a man around to do things like take out the trash. Jared was here, but he was so busy with the horses she handled the little things around the house herself.

She was sure there were a lot of things Hank could do for her—to her. Things no man had done in a very long time, and she wasn’t thinking about his cleaning the ashes out of the fireplace or anything like that.

Hank and his long legs reached the living room first. By the time Lois passed through the doorway after him, he was standing over the cardboard box in the center of the room, peering down into the contents.

Oops. She’d forgotten all about that.
He looked up as she entered. “What kind of party was this?”

“Just your average bridal shower/bachelorette party.” She bit her lip and almost laughed at his expression when faced with a box filled with sex toys. “One of the women in my book club sells personal pleasure devices at home parties. Those there are her samples. She’ll be by to pick them up in the morning. She had to leave the party early tonight to babysit her grandchild.”

“Her grandchild.” Hank looked a little horrified. “Okay.”

“Watch it. I’m about to be a grandmother now too, you know.” Like it or not. Lois moved closer to Hank and the box. She picked up the plastic package her friend had given her as a thank you. “A grandmother who now owns a vibrator, apparently. This was my hostess gift from her for having the party.”

Hank’s eyes narrowed as he focused on the object in Lois’s hand. He swallowed, sending his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat. His gaze moved to her lips, then his steely eyes met hers. “I don’t believe I’ve ever seen any grandmother, much less such an attractive one, holding a vibrator before.”

Lois’s heart pounded, sending her blood rushing through her veins until she got lightheaded. They were standing close enough for her to see the beginnings of stubble on Hank’s chin. Then her gaze moved to his mouth. She bit her bottom lip before bringing her gaze back to meet his.

Leaning in, Hank brushed his hand against her cheek, hovering his lips temptingly close to hers. “Lois, if I’m about to make a fool of myself, stop me now.”

She shook her head. “You are many things, Hank Miller. But a fool is not one of them.”

He thrust his hand beneath the hair at the nape of her neck, cradling her head as he crashed his lips into hers.

Blindly, Lois dropped the vibrator back into the box and freed her hands so she could touch Hank. She ran her hands over the bulging back muscles beneath his shirt. It’s what she’d wanted to do since first seeing him get out of the car earlier that day.

Hank backed her up until her knees buckled at the edge of the sofa. She sat heavily and he followed her down, pressing her back into the cushions. God, how she’d missed a man’s weight on top of her and the feel of big, rough hands against her skin.

“Tell me to stop. If that’s what you want you have to say it, because I’m not going to do it on my own.” His voice sounded gruff and as breathless as she was. His eyes mere slits as he looked at her, Lois could only imagine how she looked herself.

She felt the heat in her cheeks. She hoped he saw the desire in her eyes. “Don’t you dare stop.”

Military Romance Reads

I had no plans to post a blog today. I’m much too busy worrying about my one active-duty military consultant who is counting the months until he returns home from Afghanistan, while my other is packing because he can count in days his departure to the same region. But then I saw the mass amounts of others posting and felt left out. 🙁 So call me a sheep, but here I am, following the flock.

So here you go, the military heroes who I write to honor the real military men in my life. Some are soldiers and cowboys both, some are Marines, some are special ops while others are tankers and infantrymen, but all encompass the qualities of the very special men who inspired them.

FYI- BB Dalton is FREE and Cat Snips, my anthology which is also FREE, contains 2 military-themed short stories (Fireworks and The Soldier and the Siren).

The best laid plans…

Branson Welles doesn’t want a fiancée, but he better get one fast before his controlling grandfather yanks his trust fund out from under him. How convenient that recent college grad Jen needs money to pay her school loan just when Bran needs to hire a girl to play the role of his new lady love. It’s the perfect plan, until the sexual attraction makes it impossible for them to keep it strictly business.

One night together leads to another and before he knows it, Bran doesn’t want to fake it any longer. Could the naughty billionaire playboy really be ready to settle down, and with a virgin?

“You going to tell me what the old man did this time, or are we just going to drink our way through this one without discussing it?” Jon cocked a brow.

Bran let out a short, humorless laugh. He needed a nice stiff drink, which he’d have shortly. He needed a good fuck too, but that wasn’t on the immediate horizon, so he might as well vent as long as Jon had asked.

Glancing up, he saw the cocktail waitress on her way toward them. “Hang on until she’s gone, and then I’ll tell you.”

“Gentlemen.” The brunette bent at the waist and Bran got a nice view of the globes of her breasts showing above the buttons of the white shirt.

She lifted the first glass of amber liquid off the tray and handed it to him. She pivoted toward Jon, giving Bran a close-up view of the curves of her ass beneath the clingy black pants of her uniform.

He raised the glass to his lips and watched, amused, as Jon’s gaze dropped to her cleavage as she bent to serve him.

“You’re new, aren’t you?” Jon asked.

“Yes, sir.” She bobbed her head in a nod.

“Well, it’s nice to have you aboard.” Jon shot her the smile that Bran had seen charm the panties off more than a few females, sometimes two at a time.

“Thank you.” She smiled in return, but it had a professional feel to it. That of a person who wanted to keep her new job.

A woman immune to Jon… Interesting.

Bran guessed she was young, not long out of college, but she was no girl. She had all the curves of a woman. She adhered to the club’s employee dress code, but with an extra button left undone, a heel to lift her ass a bit higher, and trousers that fit like a second skin, she managed to ensure the male patrons had something to look at, as well as guarantee herself a nice tip at the end of the day.

“Let me know if you need anything else.” Her blue eyes, so intense in color they appeared almost a violet-blue in this light, moved from one man to the other.

Oh, Bran needed something all right. To sweat out this foul mood of his. Since racquetball hadn’t done it, perhaps bending her over the arm of the chair and spanking that sweet ass before he fucked her would, but Granddaddy would most definitely frown upon that behavior. Besides, this girl didn’t look the type.

He nodded, dismissing her. As she turned and made her way back to the bar, Jon shook his head. “She did that on purpose.”

Bran lifted a brow. “Did what?”

“Bent over so I’d get an eyeful of tit.”

“Of course, she did. She works for tips.” Bran didn’t blame her one bit. She did what she had to do to survive, just as he did.

Truth be told, her way was a hell of a lot more palatable to him than what he’d been forced to endure from his family, all in the name of keeping his trust fund—the carrot his grandfather had dangled and then threatened to yank away for most of Bran’s life.

He swallowed another long swig of whisky. It scorched its way down his throat. Bran savored the burn. It was sure as hell preferable to being numb and feeling nothing, like his father. The man had become nothing more than a puppet to Bran’s grandfather. That’s what a life under this family’s thumb did. Bran wasn’t about to let that happen to him.

“Bran.” Jon saying his name brought Bran’s head up from where he’d been transfixed watching the liquid swirl in the glass.

A frown creased his friend’s forehead. “There’s no one in here but us, so talk.”

A houseboy moved passed them and added another log to the fire, but Bran knew what Jon meant. It was early in the day. The bar was empty of members, save for them. There was no one here who would overhear and report back to his grandfather.

Letting out a sigh, Bran said, “Granddaddy has decided I need to grow up.”

The furrows in Jon’s brow deepened. “You work full time administering the foundation. You sit on how many boards? Hell, you even bought yourself a damn sedan to drive instead of that hot new British two-seater I tried to talk you into. How much more grown up does he want you to be?”

“He wants me married and popping out new pawns for him to control.”

“Married?” The shocked expression on Jon’s face was enough to make Bran snort out a laugh. “You’re not even thirty yet.”

“Yes, I know. But Grandfather was married by thirty, so apparently I have to be, as well.”

“Have to be.” Jon’s eyes opened wider. “Shit, is that written into the terms of your trust fund?”

“No, he’s more subtle, and manipulative, than that. My trust is fully revocable at any time by his whim alone, up until my thirtieth birthday. What he did say was he strongly suggested I find a woman to settle down with because he, and I quote, ‘would hate to have to reevaluate the future of the family’s holdings’.”

“That’s crazy. I couldn’t live like that. What are you going to do?”

“Finish this drink and order another. Where’s the waitress?” Bran leaned forward in the chair and craned his neck to search for her. She wasn’t in the room. He fell back with a huff.

“Hey, that’s an idea…”

“What’s an idea? Remain so drunk I don’t notice I’m destitute when he yanks it all away from me?”

“No, my idea is a bit more fun than that, and you get to keep your money.”

“Do tell.”

“We’re rich. It’s about time we started acting like it.”

“I’m rich for now, until Granddaddy says otherwise. And what do you mean act like we’re rich?” Bran pointedly eyed the immediate surroundings. The oak paneled room. The polished sterling silver trophies on the mantle that surrounded a fireplace large enough a grown man could almost stand upright inside. The life-size John Singer Sergeant portrait of the exclusive club’s founder hanging above.

“I meant you can buy a drink, so why can’t you buy a fiancée?”

“Oh? Is there a new store in town I missed? Fiancées-R-Us?”

“No, smart ass, but I have an idea where you might be able to get one. Here she comes. Be quiet and let me do the talking.” Jon pulled his feet off the ottoman and planted them square on the floor.

“She who?” Bran frowned at his friend.

“Shh.” Jon leaned forward and raised one hand to signal the server.

A Prince Among Men

Who needs a prince when there’s a sexy soldier in your bunk? Hoo rah!

Red, Hot, & Blue, Book 9

Sergeant Ryan Pettit blogs anonymously as Groundpounder, recording non-confidential details of a deployment where every day feels exactly the same—until a female reporter shows up at his firebase. And he realizes nothing will ever be the same again.

Though his orders are clear—protect her, but make her life so miserable she high tails it back to London—the last thing he wants is to watch her leave in a cloud of Afghanistan dust.
Intrigued by Groundpounder’s blog posts, Vicki Vanover flirted, bribed, and outright threatened her way to the front lines outside of Kandahar. Nothing has ever stopped her from getting a story, but an accidental night in Ryan’s bunk is a distraction—and attraction—she never anticipated.

Yet Afghanistan leaves Vicki with more questions than answers. Why won’t Ryan let her anywhere near the local women she wants to interview? Who is the mysterious, red-headed Lt. Wales everyone treats with such deference? Worst of all, why is watching Ryan run toward danger, instead of away from it, enough to stop her heart?

The depth of Giovanni’s cries spoke his passion.

That didn’t surprise Jacqueline Monroe Scarpelli one bit. Her husband Gio was a passionate man. Sultry, foreign, vibrant, and the most brilliant painter she’d ever seen. His artist’s temperament made him ardent and sensitive, but also sometimes moody and reclusive.

Though he’d never stay that way long and would make it up to her in the most incredible and inventive, toe-curling ways.

Jax closed her eyes to fully absorb each and every vocal nuance, recognizing as the volume rose, the resonance that signaled Gio’s impending orgasm.

She should be familiar with the growing crescendo. In their ten-month marriage, and during their short three-month courtship before eloping, she had experienced the symphony of his lovemaking more times than she could count. His progression from the words of love whispered in heavily accented English, which grew into shouts in Italian that she couldn’t understand but still knew instinctively their meaning.

Mouth dry, Jax’s stomach tensed and her heart rate sped in reaction to Gio’s lovemaking.
This time, however, was different than all the others. Very different.

Tonight, Jax stood outside of Gio’s art studio, and the feminine cries of pleasure answering Gio’s inside were not hers.

Ho, Ho, Promo Ho – Nice & Naughty

Another Cat Johnson holiday-themed book is actually 3 in 1. NICE & NAUGHTY – three love stories, three heroes, but all intertwined with one over-arcing theme–sexy firemen raising money for charity by posing nude for a calendar and hosting a bachelor auction.

I LOVE old Christmas movies. Christmas in Connecticut starring a young Barbara Stanwyck is probably my favorite of the bunch but I can rewatch these classics every year. The themes inspired me for the stories in this trilogy. If you love the old black-and-white classic holiday movies such as Christmas in Connecticut, Shop Around the Corner (remade with Tom Hanks as “You’ve Got Mail”), and Holiday Inn, you’ll love the three Nice & Naughty stories they inspired.

Nice & Naughty ~ a hot holiday trilogy with firemen

What’s better than a fireman? Twelve of them, naked, on the pages of your calendar.

Secret Recipe: A famous lifestyle maven who secretly can’t cook? Good thing a sizzling hot fireman/calendar model knows his way around the kitchen and is there to rescue her and her charity event from certain disaster. If they detour to the bedroom on the way to the kitchen, even better.

Mr. December: When the real December calendar man gets sick, a rich department store owner has to step in for him and play Santa. Once he meets the pretty lady photographer sent to cover the event, things really start to heat up. The only problem is, she has no idea who he really is, and he’s not all that keen on telling her.

Can’t Buy Me Love: What do you get when you take one over-worked caterer on the brink of a nervous breakdown and add a hunky fireman for sale at the charity bachelor auction she’s catering? You get a woman who finally finds the one gift to buy herself that she’s never going to want to return.

The hot firemen you loved in Opposites Attract are back with their friends, but now they’re wearing a lot less clothing and heating up the holidays like never before. Be prepared for secret identities, a sizzling calendar shoot, smoldering bachelor firemen up for auction, sexy Santas and a whole lot more!

Classic Romance Tropes – the marriage of convenience

Classic romance tropes, those tales that have been told and retold for centuries. The Harlequin-esqe themes that have kept that publishing house in business, and at the top of the romance world, for years. Classic themes of love are everywhere–even in that newest sensation. You know the one, the book that shall  not be named. I personally consider Voldabook (AKA 50 Shades) just another retelling of the Cinderella story, where the plain Jane meets the prince, or sheikh, or millionaire (or billionaire, to account for inflation). He falls hopelessly in love with her and moves heaven and earth to be with her. Only in this version, he’s a damaged ‘prince’ wielding duct tape and a belt and only her love can save him.

Anyway, today I’m focusing on another classic romantic device, the marriage of convenience. You know the type–the love story is centered around a couple who has to get married for any number of reasons, usually because his/her family needed the money to save the family land or title or whatever.

Since I write contemporary westerns, I don’t have any titled ladies in danger of losing their family castle because it’s been entailed and will go to the next male heir in line. I do however, have a marriage of convenience in my new Studs in Spurs release, FLANKED.

What’s the reason for the marriage? A very modern one–health insurance. She’s got it through her job, he needs it for a career-saving surgery, so they figure what the hell? Besides, they’re already enjoying the, to paraphrase historical romance that made this trope so popular, “carnal knowledge of the marriage bed” anyway. (Now you see why I don’t write historical–I’m no good at the dialogue.)

What my characters don’t count on is how being married makes them feel toward each other. Or how they’ll both react when it comes time for the agreed upon divorce.

Here’s a snippet about FLANKED, on preorder now and releasing in eBook Tuesday September 18th, and in trade paperback in August 2013.

Studs in Spurs, Book 5

It’s the perfect plan…until the ties that bind reach into their hearts.

Garret James doesn’t need a woman tying him down. Not when the number of buckle bunny notches on his belt—and his position in the pro bull rider standings—are both on the rise. Just when he learns he’s this close to blowing out his bad shoulder, Silver Jordan roars into his life, long, leather-clad legs straddling her Harley. Hell, he might not mind being tied to one woman, if that one woman was her. There’s one problem—she’s his friend’s sister. But once their eyes lock, resistance is futile.

Then Silver offers him a smoking-hot deal. He gets the hottest sex of his life and access to her health insurance for his career-saving surgery—all wrapped up in a marriage of convenience.

For a while, dodging questions and hiding their arrangement is easy. But in private, they battle emotions between them they never expected to grow. After all, the marriage is only temporary…isn’t it?

Warning: Contains body piercings guaranteed to make you squirm, a very intimately placed tattoo, one clandestine wedding and even more secretive sex.

May News

What’s happening? Well, a lot actually, which is why I’ve been a bit MIA.

WRITING, writing and more writing and I am in the final stretch, so close to typing THE END I can almost taste it on my first Kensington novel, One Night with a Cowboy (Oklahoma Nights, Book 1).  It’s a great feeling and I’m high on dopamine or whatever else happens to a body when a huge goal is finally achieved. Of course, I expect to crash pretty badly when faced with that blank page and that 0 word count for Book #2. If you see me wallowing during that period, please give me a little kick in the ass. Thanks.

PROMO, of course. Would you expect any less from me? Anyway, I have embraced the evil that is the FACEBOOK PAGE, forced upon all (and I use this term loosely) public figures. Since FB won’t allow a personal profile page to have more than 5,000 friends and I am rapidly approaching that number, I have decided to actually do something with my official author FB page I set up years ago and I have added a special EXCLUSIVE FAN ZONE tab. There, people who have LIKED my page can view content available to no one else. Right now, I have an excerpt from my upcoming September release of the next Studs in Spurs bull rider book, FLANKED. That book is currently through final line edits and awaiting galley proofing so the only folks who’ve even seen it are my editor and the FLE at Samhain, but I’m sharing a small piece of it on that fan page. Pretty exciting, right?!

Also, I’ve set up a page on this site called CAT’S CREW (for now, until I change my mind again and rename the tab/page). On there are my tips of what anyone can do to help their favorite authors. Content on that page may also change. (We authors do like to revise, rewrite, edit and wordsmith, don’t we?)

TRAVEL. It’s convention season and though my schedule isn’t as packed as some of my author peeps, it’s pretty full. RT Chicago 2012 has come and gone, but I’ve already ordered my promo for RT Kansas City 2013. But first, I have to get my act together (as well as my costumes and promo) and get ready for AAD NOLA (Authors After Dark in New Orleans) in August.

COVERS! I love cover art. Who doesn’t, right? And part of the fun of having a few self-published titles out there along with my traditionally published books is that I can play around with them. I change prices and see how that affects sales (keep an eye on them because you never know when the whim with hit and I’ll slash prices on a few titles for a few days at the sites that allow that, such as All Romance eBooks and Barnes & Noble. I can also change covers, and I’ve recently done that. Since Opposites Attract, Nice & Naughty, and Just Desserts are all trilogies, and kind of connected, I decided to make them look more like a series and a very talented cover artist helped me with that.

a sexy trilogy of revenge

And since I wanted readers to know that my Educating Ansley was both a cowboy book and a menage, I had another wonderful cover artist friend of mine create this beauty…

So that’s it for now. Back to the research, writing, editing and proofing so I can wrap this baby up and send it off to my editor, but I’ll be back!
