New Review: Private Lies

“…Cat Johnson exceeded my expectations with her comically endearing story PRIVATE LIES.  Jax’s independent nature and opinion of her mother’s schemes kept me chuckling especially during some of the more candid and embarrassing conversations.  Jax’s honesty, hurt over her husband’s betrayal, anger over the whole situation and lust for a bartender blend into one wacky fun storyline that’s full of many ‘OMG, she didn’t just…’ moments and several ‘oh yeah, you go girl!’ scenes as well.   The sex scenes are hot and Shane is absolutely loveable.  Oh, and I imagine you want to know what happens with the soon-to-be ex?  Well you’re just going to have to pick up a copy to find out – but I have to tell you, when Jax gets even she does it with style.  This is the perfect story to warm your heart and tickle your funny bone on a cold winter’s day.

PRIVATE LIES is one of the 28 Days of Heart stories being released through All Romance Ebooks during the month of February.  All profits generated from sales of these titles will be donated to the American Heart Association to help combat the number one killer of women.”

Something to warm you on a cold winter day…

A lonely writer, a snow storm and a sexy man with amnesia…all the makings for one hot Christmas Eve! Can Ginny find the inspiration she needs to get her career, and love life, out of the cold?

EXCERPT (G)

When she turned around again, she found him already bundled in the blanket, which was good since she saw his boxer shorts as well as his jeans on the floor. Yup, he was naked under there, all right. Alone, in the middle of the night, with a naked stranger. She should probably be nervous. Ginny’s heart was beating faster, but not with nerves.

Trying her best to ignore the boxer shorts, she retrieved the sopping wet jeans from the floor and hung them from an old nail stuck in the mantle. The family who owned this house probably hung their Christmas stockings there. Ginny hadn’t bothered to hang her stocking this year, but the naked and shivering Christmas gift she’d found in the snow qualified as the best thing she could imagine filling her stockings anyway.

Sitting down next to him, she found the couch literally vibrated with his shivering. “How do you feel now?”

“Cold.”

Short and to the point. She wondered if he was always a man of so few words or if hypothermia caused it. Oh, well. She considered herself a flexible kind of girl. She could deal with either a talker or a quiet man. Besides, verbal ability in a male was overrated, anyway.

“I think your core body temperature dropped too low. You must have been out there for quite a while before I found you. We have to warm you up somehow.” The stove in the kitchen operated on electricity so she couldn’t make him hot tea. Her fire looked pathetic, so she couldn’t even warm the kettle in the hearth like some pre-electricity pioneer woman. That left only one thing for her to do.

“The boiler in the basement won’t work until the electricity comes back on so I guess we’re going to have to share body heat.” Still clutching the blanket for dear life and shaking, he watched her wide eyed as she stood and stripped out of her own jacket and began to unbutton her pajama top. She paused. “Close your eyes.”

He half laughed, half chattered. “You’re going to crawl under this blanket with me naked to warm me up but I can’t watch you undress?”

“That’s correct.”

Everyone loves a soldier…

AFGM_200I’ve had this fantasy since I began seriously writing romance in 2006. I’ve always wanted to walk through an airport and see a traveler reading one of my books, like I always see them reading James Patterson, or whatever the current, hot new bestselling release is (according to the NY Times). Well last night, the soldier kind of made my dreams come true. My Army consultant is stateside for leadership training and…this is amazing, I still can’t believe it…while flying to Fort Benning in Georgia, he saw a woman reading my book in the airport!

It was the first one he helped me write back in 2007, A Few Good Men, while he was a tank commander in Ramadi and I started seriously penning real life military missions into my romantic fiction, thanks to him. He told the woman he knew me, and that I support his platoon, but he didn’t tell her he helped me, that the missions in the book were actually his. He didn’t think she’d believe him. I reminded him that his name is most likely in the dedication, but always a man of mystery, Sean wanted her to figure it out for herself. And actually, now that I look back at that dedication, I used his nickname because he was feeding me such incredible military details, I was afraid I’d get him in trouble if I put his real name. Whether she knows or not, I am still thrilled. I didn’t get to see it myself, but someone was reading my book in the airport!

This event, the fulfillment of my lifelong dream, if even on a very small scale, strikes me on two levels. One, as much as I often love to loathe Amazon.com and support wholeheartedly the local indie bookshops in my area, I know in my heart that traveler purchased that book from Amazon where I always have a place on their virtual bookshelves. I know that a tiny indie bookshop can not possibly stock even one copy of every book, every author has available, and that is a sad truth. The other thing that strikes me is how the universe has recently begun throwing boulders in my path, yet after every assault, it will dangle a carrot in front of me to keep me moving forward. Just its way of keeping cosmic balance perhaps. So as I dodge the boulders and follow the carrots, I keep plodding along. Thank you to any of you who choose to monitor my progress or join me on the journey. APAM_200

And speaking of carrots…. A new reader review has just been posted for A Prince Among Men (one of my Contemporary Military Erotic Romances), just in time for the Fourth of July holiday. Here is a blurb: “WONDERFUL! FABULOUS! I WANT MORE!!!!!! What more can I say, I loved it. Hot Hot HOT HOT HOT!!!!! I laughed, I gasped, I was totally pulled in and fell in love with the characters. All I can say about Ryan is…..I want one! Totally great plot and super well written… Phenomenal story telling.”

Have a safe and joyful Fourth of July, and don’t forget to tip a beer to all the men and women of the armed services this weekend.

Unridden Rated Orgasmic by Just Erotic Romance Reviews

You can’t please everyone. That is what I tell myself anyway. Then, sometimes, a reader or a reviewer really gets it. T. S. Peters from Just Erotic Romance Reviews really got UNRIDDEN. This reviewer got Jenna the heroine, as well as the hero and the story, which means more than I can say because so much of me is in Jenna. The mediocre writer whose career is dictated by forces outside of her control, who takes reviews and criticism too much to heart, who’s been more than once forced to turn to strangers for help only to have them turn into more in her life.

The review is very long but more than worth the read, however I believe fair use laws only allow me to paste a bit of it here, not the entire thing. It can be found in full now in the JERR Newsletter (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/justeroticromancereviewsnewsletter/) available at their Yahoo group. It will eventually be posted at the JERR website, though there is usually a bit of a lag. (justeroticromancereviews.com)

JERR REVIEW SNIPPET FOR UNRIDDEN (STUDS IN SPURS, BOOK 1)

“This is a story about an erotic romance author whose reviewers and agents tell her that her writing is just average. She is told that if she wants to further her career she has to change her style. Although I am not normally into cowboys, just this premise alone sparked my interest and had me laughing my head off. I feel the need to warn readers that this is not a true ménage book. It is at its heart still a boy meets girl story. Girl just happens to leave her options open while she’s falling. …the sex (which there is a WHOLE LOT of) between them is amazing! I found it to be adventurous, passionate and very, very stirring… I would happily recommend this book to anyone, with full assurance that it would soon be on the keeper shelf.”

T.S. Peters, Just Erotic Romance Reviews (JERR)

Rated Five Stars: The reviewer found this book to have engaged all her reading senses. Well written, arousing, with well developed characters and plot line. There were no faults with this story, and considers it definitely worth re-reading

Heat Level Orgasmic!!! Our reviewer found the ultimate satisfaction with this book.

When country boys meet a city girl, everyone is in for a wild ride.

Studs in Spurs, Book 1

Slade Bower and Mustang Jackson are living the high life on the professional bull-riding circuit. The prize money is big, the bulls are rank, and the women are willing. But something is missing.

For Slade, waking up in a different city with a different woman each morning is holding less and less appeal. Even Mustang’s creative attempts to shake things up don’t help. Then along comes a big-city author who’s like nothing they’ve ever encountered. Something about her makes Slade sit up and take notice—and Mustang is always up for anything.

Romance writer Jenna Block has a problem: her agent thinks a cowboy book will jump start her career. A born New Yorker, Jenna doesn’t do cowboys, not on paper, and definitely not in real life. Luckily for her there are two cowboys ready, willing and able to take her out of her comfort zone in every way that counts…and some ways she hadn’t counted on.

Product Warnings

This story contains two hot cowboys, one very lucky woman, hot ménage sex, and lots of bull.

EXCERPT PG 13

They hadn’t even gotten all the way back to the corner yet when one of the bull riders spotted them. “Hey, Chase! Did you know these women all write romance novels?”

True to the cowboy gentleman stereotype, the cowboy who’d spoken abandoned the chair he occupied and swung it behind Jenna so she could sit. Jenna couldn’t remember the last time a man had given her his seat back in New York.

“That’s my friend, Garret.” Chase informed her, then raised a brow. “Romances, huh? You said you were a writer but you didn’t say romance.”

Jenna found herself not only seated, but also with a cup of beer. It mysteriously appeared and was shoved in her hand. Taking a gulp for lack of anything else to drink, she let the cold foam slide down her suddenly dry throat.

She looked up at Chase above her and shrugged. “Eh, you know, I like to remain mysterious.”

Chase squatted down next to the chair and tipped his hat back so he could look up at her.

He laughed. “You are that, Jenna. You definitely are that. Mysterious and beautiful.”

Jenna shook her head at him. “And you, Chase, are a flatterer and a flirt.”

She watched another smile curve his lips and sighed while trying to ignore how good the attention felt. She wrote it off to her thirty-five-year-old psyche enjoying the attentions of a younger, okay, much younger man. But a little innocent flattery couldn’t hurt anyone, could it?

Around her, the other three authors had never looked happier, each flanked by at least one cowboy. The one next to Barb, Garret, Chase had called him, grabbed the now empty pitcher and as he left to go refill it at the bar, Barb leaned over close to Jenna. “Oh, my God! These are real cowboys!”

Jenna laughed and whispered back, “Yeah, I know.”

“I mean real, not just guys who like to wear boots and hats,” Barb amended.

Yeah, she’d noticed that distinction herself. Still laughing, Jenna raised her voice. “Barbara, this is Chase. He’s competing in the bull riding finals and he’s up for Rookie of the Year.”

Chase stood and tipped his hat to Barb. “Ma’am.”

Jenna couldn’t help but smile at Barb’s raised brow as she looked from Jenna to Chase and back to Jenna again. If that look didn’t insinuate that Jenna should go for it, she didn’t know what it did say.

If only Barb knew Jenna had already gotten herself a cowboy, two in fact. That thought had Jenna glancing around the bar once more, looking for the two missing men.

Chase got pushed further back behind her when the other cowboy returned with another two full pitchers of beer and put them on the table. Barb took that opportunity to lean in again. “Chase is adorable.”

“Yeah, adorable, just like a puppy.” Jenna rolled her eyes.

Barb shrugged. “So he’s young. Big deal. It’s not like you’re going to marry him. I think you’d get more out of one night with him than that conference session you took about writing hotter sex.”

“Oh my God, Barb! You are so bad!” Jenna hissed and felt her face heat. She dared a glance in Chase’s direction and saw him watching her and smiling. Yeah, odds were good he knew he was the subject of the conversation, which had Jenna’s cheeks reddening even further, she was sure.

“When else can you be bad, Jenna? Come on. What happens at the romance writers’ convention in Tulsa, stays at the romance writers’ convention in Tulsa.”

Jenna seriously doubted that was true, considering the notorious gossips attending the conference.

Barb’s cowboy finally finished pouring beer for the table, including Jenna, she noted as she glanced at her almost overflowing cup. Jenna was happy when he then went back to focusing on Barb, which meant that Barb didn’t have the time to focus on Jenna’s sex life any further.

She felt a hand on her shoulder right before she felt a warm breath of air tickle her ear. “You sure are cute when you blush.”

Jenna felt the heat deepen and spread across her already blazing cheeks at that comment. Chase grinned wider because of it. She raised the big plastic cup and took another huge swallow and tried to ignore that Chase’s attention was starting to make other parts of her anatomy heat up as well.

As the noise level increased and the beer started to go to her head, Jenna saw close to a dozen shot glasses suddenly appear on the table and she was swallowing something that burned her throat and made her cough. She grabbed her cup of beer and downed it gladly to sooth the fire of the shot. Before she knew it, she was having difficulty walking a straight line to the bar’s bathroom.

In the ladies’ room, Jenna wasn’t so drunk she didn’t think to check out how she looked in the mirror as she washed her hands. Nor did she forget to reapply her lipstick, though staying in the lines seemed to take more concentration than it should have.

Running her fingers through her hair, she consulted her flushed reflection one last time and grabbed the door handle, cringing when she overestimated the weight of the door and sent it crashing into the wall.

Pretending she hadn’t caused the racket, she slipped into the hallway that contained the doors to the men’s and ladies’ rooms as well as an ancient looking payphone, and found Chase waiting for her.

“Hey, there.” He put one hand on her shoulder and smiled at her, but it wasn’t in a aw shucks, ma’am way like when he’d first approached her that night. It was in a sultry and very adult I’m a man, and you’re a woman, so how about it? way that twisted her stomach and parts lower.

“Hey.” Her voice sounded husky in her own ears.

Chase made a point to consult the digital readout on his cell phone before he held it up for her to see. “I still have a few hours left of my birthday. There’s time for you to give me that birthday kiss you promised.”

Had she promised that? Between Chase’s temptingly sexy lips and the alcohol, she honestly couldn’t remember. When he leaned his head down so his mouth was barely a breath from hers, Jenna stopped trying to remember and instead let him close the small distance to meet her.

Things quickly became a blur as Chase’s hands came up to first cup her face, then tangle in her hair. He kissed her deeper and she let him, opening her mouth when his tongue slid between her lips.

Heart-pounding, she found herself pressed up against the wall by Chase’s lean, hard body. She wrapped her arms around his waist as he tipped his head and kissed her harder. That slight shift of his position pressed his thigh more closely in between hers and she realized just how good that pressure felt. Too good. She wanted more. She didn’t want to want more.

Jenna pulled away and broke the kiss. Chase let her, leaning his forehead against hers for just long enough to let out a satisfied moan.

“Thank you, Jenna. That was the best birthday present I’ve gotten in a very long time.” Then he straightened up, grabbed her hand, adjusted the cocked brim of his hat, and led her back to the table, where too many pairs of eyes widened and more than a few sets of eyebrows raised.

Jenna glanced at Chase and saw he was smeared in her lipstick. She shot him a quick signal to wipe his mouth as his fellow bull riders chuckled. She quickly took a moment to wipe at her own most likely horrendously lipstick-smeared mouth.

Horrified, she glanced at her friends and found them grinning wide and looking about as drunk as she felt. Barb raised a shot to her in salute and smiled, right before Barb’s cowboy grabbed her hand, pulled her from the chair and led Barb back toward the same hallway.

Halfway across the floor, Barb turned. “What happens in Tulsa…”

“Stays in Tulsa,” Megan echoed, as she was pulled, giggling, into the lap of a cowboy. Ann didn’t answer since her mouth was suddenly occupied by the fourth cowboy.

Jenna raised a brow and glanced up at Chase, who shrugged, then started to massage her neck and shoulders gently. “I told you we were a welcoming bunch.”

As her head lolled to the side in ecstasy, Jenna said, “You can say that again.”
